My head hurts; Brett Favre is once again, for about the ninth season in a row, it seems, managed to make himself an off-season spectacle; now, he’s apparently going to talk with the Vikings about being their QB in 2009.
1. Can somebody, anybody, anywhere, please, please, get a memo to Brett: “hey, buddy, you’re looking like a total doofus and losing legacy points by the truckload every year you do this silly song-and-dance”?
2. How hard up must the Vikings be that they’d even want to consider a mediocre has-been to be their QB? Was anybody in Minnesota watching tapes of his year with the Jets last year? Anybody going to interview Thomas Jones? He was a great and gutsy QB in his day, but he’s always been overrated, and now his skills are surely diminished, plus (and I’m no fan of Tarvaris Jackson) aren’t you essentially tossing Jackson and Sage Rosenfels (a couple pretty nice seasons in Houston) under the bus?
3. Are the Vikings really that close to the Super Bowl that they think he can put ’em over the top? He’ll throw a stupid interception at a crucial time, trying to be a cowboy, and ruin the postseason for ’em anyway. Sheesh.
At least Roger Clemens finally retired (of course, if not for the steroids thing, he might be still pulling these shenanigans as well). There’s a time to say “goodbye”, and a way to say “goodbye”, and I’m even cool with one “reneging” (hey, I can appreciate it’s hard, OK?). But this yearly saga has the effect of diminishing his legacy big-time. He really comes off as a sad act…
